Newport's place in the US market

#1 menthol. #2 overall.

Newport is the flagship menthol brand in the US, owned by R.J. Reynolds (a Reynolds American subsidiary of British American Tobacco).

Newport was launched in 1957 by Lorillard, originally based in New York City. Lorillard was acquired by Reynolds American in 2015; Reynolds American itself was acquired by British American Tobacco in 2017. Newport is now a flagship brand of R.J. Reynolds. The brand is the #1 menthol cigarette in the US by sales and #2 best-selling cigarette brand overall, behind only Marlboro.

Menthol cigarettes have faced increasing regulatory pressure. The FDA proposed a ban on menthol as a characterizing flavor in April 2022. That proposed rule has been delayed multiple times and remains under review as of mid-2026. If enacted, Newport Menthol would be affected; Newport Red (non-menthol) would remain available.

Newport heritage

A New York brand with North Carolina roots.

Newport launched in NYC in 1957; manufacturing is concentrated in North Carolina today.

Newport was launched in 1957 by Lorillard, originally based in New York City. Lorillard was acquired by Reynolds American in 2015; Reynolds American itself was acquired by British American Tobacco in 2017. Newport is now a flagship brand of R.J. Reynolds.

Newport's manufacturing is concentrated in North Carolina (the heart of US tobacco country), but the brand's strongest consumer base is in the Northeast — particularly New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. These states also have the highest cigarette taxes, which is why Newport cartons are typically most expensive in Newport's strongest markets.
