Why the price varies so much

Three things drive the cost of a cigar: tobacco quality (aged premium filler costs far more than machine-cut budget leaf), construction (hand-rolling by a torcedor vs. machine-rolling), and aging — premium blends are aged for years before release. Then come taxes: federal excise tax plus state tax, which is why the same cigar costs different amounts in different states. A $2 wholesale stick can easily carry $3 of tax before it hits a shelf.
