How many drinks are in a bottle of wine?

A standard 750ml bottle of wine holds 25.4 fluid ounces. Divide that by a 5-ounce pour — the US standard wine serving — and you get exactly 5 glasses per bottle. Restaurant pours are often closer to 6 ounces, in which case a bottle stretches to about 4 glasses. Either way, the answer people usually want is five.

"Drinks" and "glasses" are not always the same thing, though. The US defines a standard drink as 14 grams of pure alcohol — the amount in a 12-ounce 5% beer, a 5-ounce 12% glass of wine, or a 1.5-ounce shot of 40% spirits. A 750ml bottle of 12% wine contains about 90ml of alcohol, which works out to roughly 71 grams — about 5 standard drinks. So for a typical table wine, glasses and standard drinks line up nearly one-to-one.

Higher-alcohol wines change the math. A 14.5% ABV red still pours 5 glasses, but each glass is closer to 1.25 standard drinks, making the bottle about 6.
