How many cigarettes are in a vape?
A 5% (50mg/ml) vape equals roughly 20–60 cigarettes — one to three packs — depending on how much liquid it holds and how much nicotine you absorb. The most commonly quoted figure is that a 600-puff disposable is equivalent to about 1.5 packs of cigarettes.
The short answer: it depends on the device
A vape is not a fixed number of cigarettes, because two vapes can be wildly different. A pocket-sized pod with 0.7ml of liquid and an 8,000-puff bar are both called "vapes," but they hold a fraction of the nicotine. The cigarette equivalent depends on three things: how much nicotine the liquid contains (strength × volume), how much of that you actually absorb per puff, and how much nicotine a cigarette really delivers.
With those variables in mind, most estimates land between 20 and 60 cigarettes per typical disposable — one to three packs. The frequently cited rule of thumb is that a 600-puff disposable is about a pack and a half, which is why vape shops and comparison guides use that number most often.
The nicotine math: 50mg/ml vs 10-12mg per cigarette
A 5% disposable contains 50mg of nicotine per milliliter. A standard 2ml disposable therefore holds about 100mg of nicotine. A cigarette, by contrast, contains roughly 10-12mg of nicotine, but only about 1.5-2mg is absorbed into your bloodstream. Vaping absorption is also partial — most studies put it at 30-50% of the vaporized nicotine depending on the device and how hard you draw. That is why puff counts and milligrams never convert perfectly into cigarettes.
Puffs to cigarettes (5% / 50mg device)
Using the common range of 10-20 puffs per cigarette on a 5% device:
| Puffs | Cigarette-equivalents | Packs of cigarettes |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 5-10 | ≈ up to 0.5 |
| 200 | 10-20 | ≈ 0.5-1 |
| 300 | 15-30 | ≈ 0.75-1.5 |
| 600 | 30-60 | ≈ 1.5-3 |
| 1,200 | 60-120 | ≈ 3-6 |
| 8,000 | 400-800 | ≈ 20-40 |
Range reflects the 10-20 puffs-per-cigarette spread at 1.5-2mg absorbed nicotine per cigarette. Larger devices sit at the top of the range.
Total nicotine to cigarettes
Working from milligrams is the most reliable method, since it ignores puff length:
| Total nicotine | ≈ Cigarettes | ≈ Packs | Example device |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10mg | 5-7 | 0.25-0.35 | 0.2ml pod at 50mg/ml |
| 20mg | 10-13 | 0.5-0.7 | 1ml at 20mg/ml |
| 35mg | 17-23 | ~1 | 0.7ml 5% pod (JUUL-style) |
| 50mg | 25-33 | 1.25-1.7 | 1ml 5% disposable |
| 100mg | 50-67 | 2.5-3.3 | 2ml 5% disposable |
| 500mg | 250-333 | 12.5-16.7 | 10ml 5% bottle |
Assumes 1.5-2mg of absorbed nicotine per cigarette. Sources: US FDA (e-liquid strength reporting), CDC (cigarette nicotine content), peer-reviewed vaping absorption studies.
Why this matters for your wallet
Cigarette-equivalents are useful, but the number that actually changes your behavior is the cost. If you vaped a "pack and a half" worth of nicotine a day, what does that habit cost? Run the numbers on the vaping cost calculator, then compare it to the smoking cost calculator to see the gap side by side. Most vapers are former smokers, and the honest comparison is what makes quitting math land.
