Cigar vs. cigarette cost: the real comparison
A single cigarette costs about $0.49; a premium cigar runs $4 to $18 — but a cigar lasts 45–90 minutes and is smoked a few times a week, while cigarettes are a daily, repeated habit. At one session a day, the annual costs are almost identical.
Cigars and cigarettes are priced on completely different scales
Comparing a cigar to a cigarette by unit price is misleading, because the two products are not used the same way. A cigarette is 20 per pack, about $0.49 a stick at the 2026 US national average of $9.83, and is smoked in five-minute bursts all day long. A premium cigar sells as a single, costs $6.41 to $20.80, and is designed to be smoked slowly over an hour or more, rarely more than a few times a week.
The honest comparison therefore has three levels: per stick, per session, and per year. Per stick the cigar is 8 to 36 times more expensive. Per session — one cigarette break versus one cigar — the price is close, since a pack of cigarettes and a premium cigar both land around $9–$11. And per year, the outcome depends almost entirely on frequency, which is where cigarette habits lose the comparison.
Head-to-head comparison
| Metric | Cigarette | Cigar | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-stick price | $0.49 | $6.41–$20.80 | A premium cigar costs 10–36x a single cigarette. |
| Smoke time per stick | ~5 minutes | 45–90 minutes | A cigar is one long session; a cigarette is a quick hit. |
| Cost per minute | $0.098 | $0.17 | Per-minute, a cigar costs more — you just buy fewer. |
| Typical frequency | 10–30 per day | 1–5 per week | Cigarettes are a daily, repeated habit. |
| Inhalation | Inhaled into lungs | Usually not inhaled | Cigar smoke is held in the mouth; risk is not zero. |
| 1-per-day annual cost | $3,588 (1 pack) | $3,808 | Nearly identical at one session a day. |
| Health risk profile | Lung cancer, COPD, heart disease | Oral, esophageal, laryngeal cancers | Different sites of damage; neither is safe. |

| 2 packs of cigarettes per day | 40 × $0.49 × 365 | $7,176 |
| 3 cigars per week | 3 × $10.16 × 52 | $1,585 |

The health line: cigars are not the safer choice
The cost comparison matters little if the product is not safe. Cigar smoking raises the risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and larynx, and it is associated with heart disease, COPD, and pancreatic cancer. Because cigar smoke is not filtered and is held in the mouth, regular cigar users absorb high concentrations of carcinogens through oral tissue even without inhaling.
